Asendin/Amoxapine - Symptoms, Considerations & Warnings

Amoxapine or more popularly known as Asendin is indeed one of the many antidepressants of today normally prescribed to treat symptoms of major depression and other similar disorders. In general, Asendin works just like how most tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) do – balance the amounts of some chemicals in the brain by slowing down the reabsorption process associated with such chemicals to prevent development of depression or anxiety.

Uses of Asendin

Asendin is very much popular for being a medication used to treat symptoms of depression like changes in sleep, weight gain or loss, lost of interest to things you used to enjoy, physical pain, hopelessness or worthlessness and suicidal thoughts.

At present, what most people don’t know is that it can also be used to treat symptoms of psychotic depression like hallucinations or delusions or lasting false beliefs along with theisr depression symptoms.

Possible Symptoms

Asendin actually may cause some less severe and more severe side effects to its users that normally last for some time.

Less severe side effects normally include:

  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Dry mouth
  • Drowsiness
  • Frequent urination
  • Weakness or tiredness
  • Nightmares
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Excessive sweating
  • Sensitivity to sunlight than normal
  • Find difficulty to urinate
  • Blurred vision

While more serious or severe side effects include:

  • Muscle stiffness
  • Confusion
  • Fever
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Unmanageable shaking
  • Speech problems
  • Shuffling walk
  • Rash

Special Considerations and Warnings

When you are taking an antidepressant like Asendin, you will normally be advised not to take any other similar drugs along with just like those drugs that belong to the class of monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors like Marplan, Emsam, Nardil, and Parnate.

Same as with some other prescription and nonprescription medications, nutritional supplements vitamins, and herbal products, you will also be spared most especially if there’s a great risk or harm entailed.

Asendin on Pregnancy Issues

At present, there is not yet enough studies and evidences telling the unsafeness of Asendin in pregnant women, women planning to become pregnant, and nursing mothers.

However, to be sure, never take Asendin if you have a child to bear, unless there’s a great need and considerably under your doctor’s advice.
